The PBMU provides short-term (7 to 10 days), evidence-based in-patient care. The unit’s goal is to help stabilize patient behavior by helping with immediate crises. This project includes the buildout of the existing Shell Space for a new Autism Spectrum Disorder / Intellectual Spectrum Disorder program. This ASD/ISD unit includes new observation room, (2) consult rooms, sensory gym, seclusion room and ancillary support rooms including new exam room, team room and laundry room within a highly secure and sensitive area on the Seattle Children’s main campus. Additionally, the remodel project included phased work to improve patient milieu management and safety including multiple new door openings and a sally port to prevent patient elopement. This work also included replacement of the existing smoke detection system with a new VESDA smoke aspirating detection system.
